The Best Sandwich in Philly
Many people go to Philadelphia for the cheesesteak sandwich, but real Philadelphians know the best sandwich is the Roast Pork. It starts with an Italian roll that’s dressed up in sesame seeds, then topped with layers of razor-sharp provolone; juicy, thinly sliced pork; spicy, bitter sautéed broccoli rabe; and maybe a long hot pepper.
There is no known origin of the Pork Roast Sandwich, but there are some restaurants that have been serving it for years. John’s Roast Pork started as a small shack in 1930 and serves two sandwiches – Roast Pork and meatball. Another favorite is DiNic’s Roast Pork, a family run restaurant that serves as much as 1,000 pounds of meat on a busy Saturday.
